I am a Sunderland 21 21
By October it was realised that it was increasing in size and at a meeting with the Vascular Surgeon at Sunderland Royal, I was advised that surgery was now my best option of survival. The two methods used were discussed ie open abdomen and keyhole EVAR. He went into great detail about the benefits of both methods. At a second meeting the surgeon told me he had discussed my case with another doctor and they had come to the conclusion that a slight variant on the standard EVAR would be my best option but the choice was mine.

Although I had quite a long wait for pre Sundedland on my allocated day, once into the system all happened relatively quickly. This was an experience I can truthfully say I was dreading.
It has hit us all hard in A Company, but we will never forget him and feel for his family. Sunderland Royal Hospital 5 Stars from me. Together with a tour of the theatre that resembles a futuristic science fiction film set complete with big computer screens, robots and lasers and the surgeon's enthusiasm and deep knowledge of his subject, I went into anaesthetics feeling very relaxed about what was going to take place. I am really pleased that this was a positive experience for you and hope that you are recovering well.
Another friend from A Company, Private James Noonan, said: Tenchy was a great lad, one of the boys and always up for a laugh.

All the staff Sundrland the theatre were pleasant and charming. In his spare time he was a keen and talented boxer and regularly trained at Marley Potts Gym in Sunderland. We will miss Michael as a friend and as a fellow Light Infantryman. At this difficult time, my thoughts are with his family and friends.
Four other members of the patrol were injured during the incident. It is a tragedy that we have lost a young man with so much promise.

He was always up for laugh and a joke. Published 22 January The two methods used were discussed ie open abdomen and keyhole EVAR.
We will all miss him very much as a friend and a workmate and my heart goes out to all his family and friends at home. He had the exemplary character that we have come to expect from the British Infantryman: he was tough, resilient, liked a laugh, cheeky, but above all a professional. He often spoke about his family and how he was happy that he had ed the army and made something of himself. The surgeon is obviously a very experienced and genuinely clever man.
But the confidence and obvious professionalism of all I came in contact with from surgical team to nursing staff and the ancillary staff helped me through without fuss or bother. The Company was initially based at Shaibah Logistics Base near Basra in Southern Iraq and employed on a variety of tasks 12 guarding the base, patrolling the local rural area and escorting vital convoys into Basrah City.

One of them remains in a very serious condition, the other three soldiers are in a stable condition. We have a very passionate team who put patient care at the heart of everything they do, so to hear that you were able to receive support and care that made you feel absolutely reassured is fantastic. Following the rigours of field training, a change of tack saw Private Tench donning much smarter uniform and providing the ceremonial guard at Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, the highlight being the arrival parade of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
All done! A proud Sunderland man, he quickly integrated with the Company, establishing himself as a competent and reliable Light Infantryman. He was an enthusiastic and capable young soldier with a bright future ahead of him.

He loved boxing and even taught me and a few others to box in his spare time: he was like that, he would put himself out for his friends. The positives being a night in hospital and a few weeks recovery. By the time I was taken to my ward I was feeling both relaxed and gratified. He went into great detail about the benefits of both methods.
The only 'negative' factor of going the EVAR was that I would need annual checks for the rest of my life. The staff throughout showed great empathy and certainly appeared to work as tight team. By October it was realised that it was increasing in size and at a meeting with the Vascular Surgeon at Sunderland Royal, I was advised that surgery was now my best option of survival.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and whose lives he brightened by his presence. Suncerland a second meeting the surgeon told me he had discussed my case with another doctor and they had come to the conclusion that a slight variant on the standard EVAR would be my best option but the choice was mine. There seemed no contest between it and the alternative of days in hospital and months recovery!
After ing the Battalion he spent the first six months of his career occupied with a wide variety of tasks as A Company deployed throughout Sinderland UK supporting training for other units preparing for operations. He and his staff were both empathetic and willing to answer all questions. Having any kind of surgery can be daunting and stressful and the team Sundedland go out of their way to make all patients as comfortable as possible and answer any questions you may have.
I understand from those who knew him that he was an outstanding and popular soldier.
Scunthorpe United's game with Sunderland moved back 24 hours
He was Sunerland happy and enjoyed having a laugh with his mates - he was a bit of a joker. He was a total enthusiast who loved his job and was the first to volunteer to head out on the ground here in Synderland Iraq. When his platoon was informed that they would be attached to 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment in Basra, there was no-one more chuffed than Michael, determined as he was to take the fight to the enemy.
He had recently been selected for sniper training; a role for which only the best soldiers are chosen.
